The 90s gave us some of the best anime of all time! If you grew up in North America, you're probably extremely familiar with the chokehold that Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon had on both Western and Japanese audiences. You might have also caught Yu-Gi-Oh, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Pokemon on Cartoon Network or Kids' WB in the late 90s. 

Yu-Yu-Hakusho, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Hunter x Hunter (1997) made their debut in Japan in the 90s, but their English dubs were not aired on American television until the 2000s. Still, anime fans could subtitled files online or DVDs at video stores. Still, it wasn't as easy as simply turning on Netflix to watch any show from their massive anime catalogue.
